Law students seek FIR for Water Pollution

Chandigarh:The Permanent Lok Adalat on Monday issued notices to the Chandigarh Administration, the Municipal Corporation, The Deputy Commissioner and the pollution Control Board on a petition demanding  Correction in sewage disposa land treatment sanitation problems, water pollution and effluents in water, which are causing health problems.

The petition has been filed by second year law students Mehak Mehra, Sanjana Makkar and Navjot K Sidhu. They have Demanded that an FIR be registered against the officials concerned who are not acting on these issues. The adalat has sought the authorities reply by september 26.

The petition claims water pollution in chandigarh and deficiencies in sanitation Advocate sunil mallan who guided the students in filling the petition,argued that untreated sewage was being drained into water bodies ,which was adversely affecting aquatic life. It was also argued that sewage from near by areas was still flowing into sukhna lake which  was against the orders of the High court.

The petition alleges that government servants are breaching the terms and conditions of section 15 and section 17 of the environment (protection) act, 1986 section 24 and section 43 of the water (Prevention and control of pollution) Act, 1974, and section 5 and sectio 7 of the Indian Fisheries Act, 1897. It has been Mentioned that sewage tanks and water tanks are closely built in residential areas because of which sewage is getting mixed with drinking water,leading to health problems.

The petition has also pointed out to the stench of tertiary water being used in public parks and other places. It states that this leads to communicable diseases and near by residents, mainly children and aged people , are at a high risk of water – borne diseases.
