Chandigarh more safe for gangsters, unsafe for people with 22 murders, 55 rapes in 9 months

CHANDIGARH: The city beautiful Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana is losing its tag of safest city in the region with the sharpt rise in heinous crime in recent past. Indeed Chandigarh is emerging a safe sanctuary for the gangsters from neighbouring states.

Chandigarh has recorded 20 cases of murders in first nine months of year 2017 beside 22 cases of attempt to murder. So far 50 cases of rape have been registered which means about 6 rapes every month. 11 cases of decoity and 36 of heist are registered during this period.

Besides major crimes, city has seen spurt in cases of stalking of women and snatchings. police is unable to control the menace.Till September 30, 128 cases of snatching and 655 cases of thefts including 477 huse burglaries. Chandigarh has recorded about 52 cases of stalking in the last nine months. As many as 95 cases were reported in 2016.

The gangsters fron Punjab and Haryana have made Chandigarh a safe heaven. Two gangsters  Bharat Bhushan, alias Bhola shooter, and Inderjeet Singh Perry arrested by Chandigarh police in July 2017 revealed that they along with Sampat Nehra and Deepak, alias Tinu, who escaped from Panchkula police custody on June 17, were sharing a rented accommodation at Housing Board Society in Sector 63.

Three gangsters of Punjab – Harwinder Singh Rinda, Harjinder Singh Akash and Dilpreet – wanted in three cases of murder in Ropar, took shelter in Panjab University (PU).Later they murdered  Satnam Singh a Sarpanch from Gurdaspur district outside a Gurdwara in sector 38 West.

According to police records two students of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, Gurshahid alias Shera and Jaipal started the car-jacking business with a Sector-33 businessman being one of their first targets. They are among many youth lured to crime for easy money.

Another wanted criminal, Ranjit Singh, alias Dupla, who was running an international racket in arms smuggling, was arrested near Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh.

Prabhjinder Singh alias Dimpy, 42, a notorious gangster who was facing over a dozen charges of contract killing and abduction was living in Chaniogarh. He was gunned down by two motorcycle-borne assailants on July 7, 2006 near Sukhna Lake Chandigarh while he was in his car with his gorl freind Harveen Dhillon. His murder remained unsolved even as two accused arrested in this case were acquitted by court. One of the accused Jaswinder Singh Rocky was recently murdered near Solan in Himachal Pradesh.

Many unsolved murder cases in the UT Chandigarh also haunts the citizens. The murder of Neha Ahlawat on July 30,2010 still remains shrouded in mystery. Neha, a 22-year-old girl was murdered clsoe to her reidence in Sector 38 (West). She was also raped before murder. A reward of Rs.1 lakh was announced for clue on her murder.

City’s leading businessman Amarjeet Singh, owner of Sham Fashion Mall, was shot dead by two unidentified motorcyclists outside his house in Sector 35 here on May 5, 2009. Even eight years after the incident, the murder mystery remains unsolved. It seemed a contract killing and family also announced a reward of Rs.20 lakh for information about killers.

The murder of lawyer Sukhmanpreet Singh Sidhu alias Sippy Sidhu (34) is still a mystery for his family for more than two years.Sippy Sidhu was shot dead at a park in Sector 27 on September 20, 2015. The hand of daughter of a sitting High Court judge was suspected by family but police failed to make any headway.

Former SSP Chandigarh Eish Singhal during a press meet said that the easy availability of illegal firearms to criminals is one of the main reasons behind these crimes. In Chandigarh, we have seized more than 100 weapons in the last two-and-a-half years.
