CHANDIGARH: Faced with protest by Sikhs, BJP president Amit Shah who was here today to hold a political meeting with SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and former CM Parkash Singh Badal had cancelled his scheduled visit to Gurdawara Sector 34 here.

Amit Shah discussed the political modalities with SAD leaders for the 2019 Lok Sabha poll. After the meeting he was scheduled to pay obeisance at the Gurdwara in sector 34. However Sikhs in large number started assembling in the Gurdwara to lodge their protest on imposing GST on langar.

The inteliigence agencies got alerted and advised Amit Shah not to visit Gurdawara. Several Akali leadeers who were trying to reach Gurdawara wsere arrested by police.

It is recalled that SAD leaders and Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal has claimed that center has waived off GST on langar. The Sikhs however rejected the claim as no such letter is issued. The center has only started a social welfare scheme in the name of sewa Bhoj under which GST paid by religious places of worship would be reimbursed. It means SGPC has to pay GST to center and it would be reimbursed under Sewa Bhoj scheme during next two years. To get reimbursement, the SGPC would submit application under Sewa Bhoj scheme to the center.

The Sikhs have sought complete waiver of GST on langar and rejected reimbursement by child welfare ministry under Sewa Bhoj scheme which is political motivated.
