CHANDIGARH : Two NSS volunteers, Rohit Kumar of PG Government College, Sector11, Chandigarh and Ashima Sharma of MCM, DAV College, Sector 36-B, Chandigarh, have been selected to represent City Beautiful in the Republic Day Parade to be held in New Delhi, on January 26 next. A communiqué to this effect has been received in the office of State Liaison Officer, NSS Cell, Chandigarh, from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, New Delhi.
The communiqué also stated that two volunteers—Rahul Chand of PGGC, Sector 46 and Shama of PGGCG Sector 11 were put in waiting list.
While talking to Mr Bikram Rana, SLO, NSS Cell, Chandigarh said that all the selected volunteers across the country have been asked to attend the camp being held by the NSS Central Cell at Dr Ambedkar Bghawan, Rani Jhansi Road, Opposite Videocon Tower, Arambagh, Paharganj, New Delhi, from January1 before participating in the RD Parade. In the camp they were taught necessary basics of participating in the parade. The volunteers were advised to maintain high level of discipline and follow the instructions accordingly.
The communiqué has further asked the selected volunteers to get requisite documents as security clearance, indemnity bond, physical fitness certificate, volunteership certificate and two passport size photos, ready so that these might be handed over to the officials at the time of reporting at the camp;. Keep the temperature of Delhi in January participants were advised to bring sufficient woolen clothing, essential personal medicines and health hygiene items.
Stating this here Mr Rana said that a selection camp had been held to pick up NSS volunteers for the pre-Republic Day camp in Chandigarh in October last from the region comprising Chandigarh, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. More than 100 NSS volunteers of different colleges and schools of the region attended the camp. Out of these, 15 volunteers were chosen for the final selection from the city. After strenuous selection procedure, four volunteers were picked up for the pre-RD camp which was held in Chandigarh in November.
After the pre-RD camp, two of the four have been picked up for participation in RD Parade. They will report at the camp by the evening of January 1, The NSS participants and programme officers will be reimbursed sleeper Class to and from rail fare by their respective institutions. Expenses incurred on board and lodging will be borne by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, New Delhi, the communiqué added.
Mr Rana also revealed that total of 14 NSS volunteers (seven boys and seven girls) have been selected from the region. Besides Chandigarh, eight volunteers-four boys and four girls were selected from Punjab; two boys and two girls from Himachal Pradesh. Mr Rana also said that it was a herculean task of selecting two out of 18,000 NSS volunteers of Chandigarh. Volunteers have to pass through a number of yardsticks to achieve the final selection. “Participating in the Republic Day Parade is the ultimate dream of every NSS volunteers,” he adds. EOM
