AMRITSAR: Guru Nanak Dev University observed 48thFoundation Day here today. Academicians, scholars, students and eminent personalities participated in these celebrations.  The first volume of “PIXELS” the monthly e-magazine of the University has also been released.

Chairman, University Grants Commission, New Delhi Prof. Virander S. Chauhan, , Prof. R.N.K. Bamezai, former Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, Katra, Jammu and Chiranjiv Singh, IAS (Retd.), President of the Alliance Francaise, Bangalore and former Ambassador of India at UNESCO, Paris participated and delivered their academic lectures on “New Challenges in Higher Education in India,” “Higher Education Quality and Governance – What could be the right path?” and on “Nanak Panth – 21st Century” respectively.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Jaspal Singh Sandhu welcomed the guest speakers and other guests. He also highlighted the achievements of the University.

Prof. Virander S. Chauhan in his lecture talked about the evolution of modern education system which has its origin nearly 250 years back. He said that education for centuries has focused on philosophy and thought. Autonomy of education has been an important factor for the emergence of eminent thinkers and philosophers. However, Indian education system in the British era was limited to producing ‘Babus’ and not thinkers and philosophers. During this time higher education got linked with social status. At the time of independence, India had only 20 Universities, the number of Universities grown to about seven hundred. Over the years, education has been linked with jobs, however education is related with acquiring the ability to learn and think independently. In the last ten years, business of ranking of education institutions has started.  A degree from high ranking institute is expected to provide high salary employment which

Prof. R.N.K. Bamezai said that quality and governance are the main issues in higher education. With limited resources we have to produce high quality educated masses and also ensure good governence of the educational institute. The present day, education gives the students skill sets and through these they earn their livelihood, but this is not real education. He said that we need to have a relook in the governing rules and regulations of the higher education institute where innovators are recognized and youngsters are nurtured to excel in the international arena.
