Seminar on 'PCOS: Changing Future of Women' at Khalsa College of Nursing

AMRITSAR: A day-long-seminar on `Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) : Changing Future of Women' was organized at Khalsa College of Nursing (KCN) here today in collaboration with Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI)’s Punjab State branch. The experts discussed the rising threats PCOS, a hormonal disorderrelating to the health of the women and how they can deal with the same by changing their sedentary life style, food habits and health awareness.

Khalsa College Governing Council (KCGC) honorary secretary Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina said while inaugurating the event said if the women is healthy, the family will remain healthy, thus the focus must be women’ well-being. He said that PCOS is a metabolic malady, the mother of all lifestyle disorders in women and it is vital that research evidence is translated to knowledge and action among women, healthcare professionals and policymakers.

Dr. Evelyn Paul Kannam, Secretary General, TNAI said that raising public awareness about PCOS through such seminars will help women and girls with the condition overcome their symptoms and reduce their risks for life-threatening related diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. They along with Dr. Surinder Jaspal, Chairperson, State Chapter of TNAI and College Principal Dr. Kamaljit Kaur earlier lighted the lamp to inaugurate the event.

Dr. Jaspal presented a report on the achievements of TNAI Punjab branch in treating PCOS as a public health priority and assisting medicals researchers and healthcare professionals to advance their understanding of PCOS to assist girls and women suffering from the same. Dr. Surat, a renowned Gynecologist and Dr. Pavneet Saini, Principal Sri Guru Ram Dass College of Nursing emphasized on the dire need of spreading awareness about PCOS syndromes and help for PCOS patients through media and public awareness. Dr.Seema Sharma, Apollo Hospital Dr. Sandeep Kaur, Associate Professor, Dr. Meenu Sharma, Lecturer, KCN and Yashpreet Kaur deliberated through presentations on the recent treatments and current advancements for PCOS patients.

The seminar was concluded with evaluation, discussions, feedback on PCOS and vote of thanks by Principal Dr. Kamaljit Kaur.

What is PCOS: She said PCOS is a common disease among women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS may have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods or excess male hormone (androgen) levels. The ovaries may develop numerous small collections of fluid (follicles) and fail to regularly release eggs, leading to complications.
