Doaba College launches First Campus Community Radio ‘Raabta 90.8MHz’

JALANDHAR : P.G. Department of Journalism & Mass Communication of Doaba College, launched, Jalandhar’s first Campus Community Radio, Radio Raabta-90.8 Mhz, in Press Club here.

Simran Sidhu –Head, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication Department of Journalism & Mass Communication said that the department has established a separate Radio Studio, Transmission Room along with a Tower with a height of 30 Mts., under the guidance of CRFC (Community Radio Facilitation Centre) for the smooth functioning and transmission of of 30 ., under the guidance of CRFC (Community Radio Facilitation Centre) for the smooth functioning and transmission of radio station. She further elucidated that through this community radio, the students of journalism department will get hands on training in include script writing, recording, giving voice-overs, audio editing and transmission etc.

Dr.Simran Sidhu apprised that with the view to determine the awareness regarding community radio among people of a rural and urban population of Jalandhar district, the department recently conducted a survey. Surprisingly only three percent of the respondents knew about community radio. Responding to the queries in the questionnaire, 73% of urban population and 62% of the rural population strongly believed that community radio will definitely contribute to the development of the society. The majority of the female respondents wished to participate in the programs related to women rights, drug de addiction, politics, and education. The respondents also wanted government policies and schemes to be discussed in detail on community radio.
Dr.Sidhu said that Community Radio Raabta is in fact of the people, for the people and by the people and it will be run with the joint efforts of a community comprising people from all the walks of like. With the sole motive to meet the social needs of the people the content of the programs will strongly focus on Health, Sports, Education, Spiritual, Public Awareness, Culture, and Development issues. However, the efforts will be made to present the content in a simple and easy manner, therefore, keeping in view the migration from other regions to Jalandhar, programs will be broadcasted in mother tongue Punjabi of the region along with a few programs in Hindi and English.
She said that initially, the recorded programs will be broadcasted for three months, covering two hours daily from 10 am to 12 noon in various formats including Talks, Interviews, Story Narration, Dramatized stories, Discussion etc. All these segments will include the songs before the 80s of all genres including spiritual and patriotic. A special schedule has been designed to meet the above-mentioned needs, beginning the day with spiritual songs in ‘Simar Simar Sukh Pao’, followed by health awareness program, ‘Tandrust Sehat’. This channel will also give voice not only to intellectuals but also to Labourers, Farmers through programs ‘Main Mazdoor Bolda Haan’ and ‘Khushaal Kisaan’.To inculcate and to transmit cultural and moral values from one generation to the next it will be done through programs ‘Maavan te Dhiaan’and ‘Umar dian tarkaalan’ .After the period of three months, the community radio will go live through the phone in programs and discussions. At the same time student community, agriculturists, NGOs will be catered through field programs.
