13th GIAN workshop at PU

CHANDIGARH:Six days GIAN International workshop “Genome Informatics” was
inaugurated by Vice Chancellor of Panjab University, Prof. Raj Kumar
today at University Institute of Engineering & Technology (UIET) ,
Panjab university, Chandigarh, here today.

PU VC emphasised upon the utility of conducting such subject specific
technical workshops under guidance from global experts. He suggested
that such workshops should be held not only in the main campus of
Panjab University but also in the affiliated colleges. He suggested
that faculty in social sciences and humanities and women faculty
should take similar initiatives.

Prof. SK Mehta, Local Coordinator of GIAN workshops gave a genesis of
the scheme sponsored by MHRD  alongwith overview of GIAN workshops
conducted at PU. He informed that the current workshop was the 13th
workshop at Panjab University in the series.

Prof. Graham Ball, Head of Bioinformatics Department at Nottingham
Trent University is the distinguished foreign expertfor the workshop
alongwith Course Coordinator Prof. R.K.Tuli. Prof. Ball is associate
director at a center of cancer research at NTU. He is also chief
scientific officer of a Biotechnology Company at Nottigham.

 The workshop will involve 48 hours of teaching through 6 days from
October 3rd to October 8th, 2018. It is being coordinated by Dr. Mamta
Juneja.

Other faculty members who will deliver the course are Dr. Ehsan Ali
from INST, Mohali and Dr. Kashmir Singh from PU.

Today Prof. Ball and Prof. Rakesh Tuli gave preparatory lectures in
the forenoon and hands on training in the afternoon. Prof. Ball
trained the participants on the selection of biomarkers associated
with prostate cancer. Dr.Tuli trained the participants on designing
promoters and genes for creation of improved living organisms.
The workshop is being attended by 30 participants who are research
scholars, Post Doctoral fellows and faculty from different institutes
in Punjab, Haryana, West Bengal and Chandigarh, informed Prof. Savita
Gupta, Chairperson UIET, PU.
