Punjab chalk out plan to involve more people in fish farming: Ranike

AMRITSAR: The Punjab today gave a push to diversification of agriculture by approving comprehensive plans for the expansion of fish farming sector thereby attracting more and more people to adopt this innovative sphere.

Stating this, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Minister, Punjab, Mr. Gulzar Singh Ranike said that the Fish Farming venture can rein in huge profits if it is run on professional lines in all the stages from initial stage to proper marketing.

The Minister further said that for this very purpose, a special course is all set to begin from 6th July at all 12 centers of the Fisheries Department. During the course, eminent national experts would guide the participants for 5 days.

The Minister further elaborated that the course would be run at Abul Khurana (Sri Muktsar Sahib), Katli (Rupnagar), Faggan Majra-Bagria (Fatehgarh Sahib), Sardulgarh, Baghapurana (Moga), Hyat Nagar (Gurdaspur), Sangrur, Malwal (Ferozepur), Amritsar, Dhandua (Nawanshahr), Bir Shikargah Kanjhli (Kapurthala) and Hariana ( Hoshiarpur).

Divulging more details, he said that the fish farmers successfully completing the course would be provided financial assistance and subsidy by the department. He exhorted more and more people to adopt fish farming in order to wriggle out of the traditional crop cycle. The Minister said that those interested in adopting this unique venture can contact the Assistant Director (Fisheries) of their respective districts.

Meanwhile, Director Fisheries Mr. Inderjit Singh informed that The Punjab Government has announced 50 percent subsidy for all districts on fish farming. He said that earlier the subsidy had been provided to only those districts facing severe problems of water logging but now the state has decided to extend the 50 percent subsidy cover for all districts. He said that Punjab has huge potential in fish farming, which could be explore to new scales by increasing the culture of fish farming.

He said that farmers having 1 acre land under fish farming would get Rs. 60, 000 for digging as per the norms of department, Rs. 20000 for feed purposes and Rs. 18000 to purchase aerator for increasing amount of oxygen in water.
